Detailed 6-Day Madagascar Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Antananarivo and Relax at Maison Gallieni
On landing at Ivato International Airport, an English-speaking guide will meet and welcome you, then transfer you to Maison Gallieni, where you spend one night. Relax and unwind, or explore the city of Antananarivo, known as Tana.
The mansion was built in 1879 on the site of a granite quarry and once housed Madagascar’s first bank. Set on a hill, it offers good views of the city. In the afternoon, relax at the hotel, swim in the pool, or head out to explore Tana.
Day 2: Fly to Anjajavy and Night Walk in the Forest
Start with an early breakfast before transferring to Ivato International Airport for your domestic flight to Anjajavy. A hotel representative will welcome you and drive you to Anjajavy Lodge on Madagascar’s northwest coast.
From your room’s balcony, look out over the Indian Ocean and the nearby forest, home to lemurs, chameleons, and hummingbirds. In the evening, you can join a night walk to see nocturnal animals like Coquerel’s sifaka, Danfoss’s mouse lemur, Grewcock’s sportive lemur, Commerson’s leaf-nosed bat, and, if lucky, the elusive fossa, Madagascar’s largest predator.
Day 3: Explore Crab’s Path and Relax by the Beach
After breakfast, take a guided walk along the Crab’s Path, known locally as Chemin des Crabes. See old baobabs, hairy crabs, and birds such as the red fody, souimanga sunbird, paradise flycatcher, Madagascar fish eagle, crested ibis, and the rare Madagascar sacred ibis.
Visit a cave to see stalactites, shark teeth, and a fossilized lemur skull. Return to the lodge for lunch and spend your afternoon relaxing by the infinity pool or exploring the private coves near the lodge.
Day 4: Walk King’s Alley and Giant’s Causeway
After breakfast, walk along King’s Alley and Giant’s Causeway, lined with old baobab trees and Tsingy rock formations. See Coquerel’s sifaka, which leap across the ground like small kangaroos, along with other lemurs like the common brown lemur, often roaming freely around the lodge gardens.
After your walk, return to the hotel for a buffet lunch surrounded by greenery. Watch the birdlife, including souimanga sunbirds and Malagasy kingfishers, along with frogs, chameleons, and lemurs in the trees.
Day 5: Choose Your Own Adventure or Relaxation
Today is yours to choose from many activities, on land and water. Visit nearby islands and nature reserves, go scuba diving, snorkeling, quad biking, or fishing. Visit the Sakalava Cave to see Madagascar bats among the stalagmites and stalactites, or enjoy a quiet picnic on a beach along the Anjajavy Peninsula.
You can also visit Antafiamoara to meet the giant tortoises reintroduced to the reserve in 2018, or explore the nearby villages of Anjajavy and Ambodro Ampasy and visit local markets for handmade crafts.
Day 6: Return to Antananarivo and Departure
After an early breakfast, your guide will transfer you to the airport for your charter flight back to Antananarivo. On arrival, a staff member will help you board your international flight home.
