Detailed 5-Day Rwanda Primates Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park
Our tour guide will pick you up from Kigali City early in the morning and transfer you to Nyungwe Forest National Park. Have lunch en route and visit the Butare Museum and the former Presidential Palace in Nyanza. On reaching Nyungwe, have dinner and rest.
Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking and Canopy Walk
Wake up early and head to the forest to locate chimpanzees before they wake up, since chimps move fast once awake, so it’s best to find them sleeping.
When you find them, you have one hour to spend with them before returning to your lodge. In the afternoon, enjoy a magical canopy walk across Nyungwe Forest for an elevated view of the entire forest, a perfect experience for birders.
Day 3: Transfer to Lake Kivu
Transfer to Lake Kivu via the Congo Nile Divide Trail. In the afternoon, take a boat cruise on the lake, exploring various islands and places of interest.
Day 4: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Transfer to Volcanoes National Park in Musanze for a gorilla trekking encounter. This park shelters Rwanda’s gorillas and some of the Virunga Mountains. On arrival, visit the mysterious Musanze Caves in the afternoon.
Day 5: Mountain Gorilla Trekking and Departure
Wake up early and head to the park headquarters for a briefing before embarking on your mountain gorilla trek. Your trek could last from 2 to 8 hours, depending on how long it takes to locate the gorillas, including a one hour encounter with them.
After meeting the gorillas, return to the park headquarters for your gorilla trekking certificates, then transfer to Kigali City to catch your onward flight.
