Detailed 6-Day Rwanda and Bwindi Gorilla Trekking Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival at Kigali International Airport and Hotel Transfer
On arrival at the airport, our driver guide will meet you and transfer you to your hotel, sharing details about the trip along the way. Check in, have dinner, and overnight stay.
Day 2: Travel to Volcanoes National Park and Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village
After an early breakfast, start the journey to Volcanoes National Park, home to Rwanda’s mountain gorillas in the Virunga range, shared by Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The drive takes about 3 to 4 hours, with views of the Virunga range and green countryside along the way.
On arrival in the afternoon, after lunch, visit the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village, home to all three of Rwanda’s ethnic groups: the Twa, Hutu, and Tutsi. Enjoy traditional performances and local food.
Day 3: Gorilla Trekking and Visit Musanze Caves
Have an early breakfast, then head to the park headquarters for a briefing on gorilla trekking from a local ranger guide. Enter the forest to search for the gorillas, walking the slippery trails on the lower slopes of Mount Karisimbi, Bisoke, or Huye. Once you find the gorillas, spend an hour watching them and taking photos.
In the afternoon, after lunch, visit the Musanze Caves on the outskirts of Volcanoes National Park for a cave walk.
Day 4: Travel to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Wake up at your own pace for breakfast, then check out and travel to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to over 700 mountain gorillas, almost three quarters of the world’s total population. The drive takes about 2 to 3 hours, with more views of the Virunga range along the way.
Day 5: Gorilla Trekking and Batwa Community
After an early breakfast, head to the park headquarters for a briefing on gorilla trekking rules from a local ranger. You will be split into groups of eight, the maximum allowed per gorilla family each day.
Trekking in Bwindi takes about 4 to 6 hours, depending on the gorillas’ movement. Spend one hour with them once found, taking photos without flash.
In the evening, visit the Batwa community to learn about their traditional hunting and gathering methods, along with local food and performances. Return to the lodge in the late evening for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 6: Travel Back to Kigali
Wake up early, have breakfast, and travel back to Kigali to catch your departure flight at Kigali International Airport.
