Rwanda Gorilla Trekking & Maasai Mara Safari Highlights
Day 1: Kigali-Volcanoes National Park (approximately 104 kilometers)
Travel from Kigali in an air-conditioned safari vehicle to Volcanoes National Park, situated within the north-western side of Rwanda and covering an area of 160 square kilometers.
Time permitting, embark on a short city excursion to visit historical and cultural sites such as Kigali Genocide Memorial Museum, Kigali Craft Market, ancient buildings, local markets, and Belgian monuments.
Enjoy lunch and embark on the 3-hour drive to Volcanoes National Park. Settle into the reserved accommodation and relax until dinner and overnight.
Day 2: Trek Rwanda Gorillas and Exciting Cultural Experience
Early in the morning, rise for hot beverages and snacks before setting off to Kinigi Park Headquarters for the 1 to 5-hour guided trek with an armed ranger and guide.
Start the adventure with a briefing at Kinigi and venture into the forest where you will relish the jaw-dropping sights and sounds of the jungle.
Keep a keen eye on the dense forest for other primates such as black and white colobus monkeys, golden monkeys, vervet monkeys, and other animals like elephants and bushbucks, as well as resident birds.
Trekking lasts anywhere between one and six hours, but once the allocated gorilla group has been sighted, trekkers are given one hour to observe and take photos of the great apes foraging, playing, resting, and cuddling. Return to the lodge for a late lunch, refreshments, and relaxation.
Your evening will be spent interacting with local community members at Gorilla Guardian Village where traditional dance performances, tales of ancient Rwandan stories, and preparation and tasting of traditional dishes will be organized.
Day 3: Boat Ride on the Twin Lakes of Ruhondo and Burera, Drive to Kigali for a Flight to Nairobi
Arise for hot beverages, fruits, and freshly-squeezed juice before setting off for a boat ride on Lakes Ruhondo and Burera at the foothills of Sabyinyo and Muhabura Volcanoes.
This ride will introduce you to colorful feathered beauties, busy fishermen collecting the day’s catch, and provide insights into the history and formation of the lakes from a local guide.
Lunch will be at the lodge or en-route while journeying to Kigali City.
Afterward, take the outbound flight to Nairobi where you will check-in for dinner and overnight.
Day 4: Depart for Masai Mara National Reserve
Early morning departure for Masai Mara National Reserve onboard an open safari vehicle, via the stunning Great Rift Valley area. Descend the escarpment and drive through Narok where you will enjoy lunch.
Immediately start the game drive through Masai Mara to find lions, elephants, Masai giraffes, Cape buffaloes, Cape elands, topis, cheetahs, impalas, zebras, gazelles, hippos, and many others effortlessly.
Close your day with a sumptuous dinner and comfortable overnight.
Day 5: Masai Mara Game Drive
The Masai Mara tour begins early in the morning, the best time to see elusive and nocturnal animals of Masai Mara National Reserve such as cheetahs, lions, spotted hyenas, serval cats, leopards, caracals, jackals, and many others.
First, enjoy delicious hot beverages and snacks, then leave the camp or lodge premises for a drive through numerous waterholes, pristine river banks, and lookout points where rich animal views are abundant.
Special and rare sightings will highlight the safari. Later return to the camp for a late lunch and a brief siesta.
In the afternoon, head out for another game drive or opt for a Masai village tour, then retire to the camp to close the day’s game drive.
Day 6: Departure
Bid Masai Mara National Reserve farewell as you head to any of the gates and exit for the next destination or airport in Nairobi.
