Detailed Rwanda Gorilla Trekking and Masai Mara Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Kigali to Volcanoes National Park
Travel from Kigali by safari vehicle to Volcanoes National Park, in the northwestern part of Rwanda, covering 160 sq. km. Time permitting, join a short city tour to visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial Museum, Kigali Craft Market, and local markets.
Enjoy lunch, then take the 3 hour drive to Volcanoes National Park. Settle into your accommodation and relax before dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Trek Rwanda Gorillas and Cultural Experience
Early in the morning, have hot drinks and snacks before heading to Kinigi Park Headquarters for a 1 to 5 hour guided trek with an armed ranger.
Start with a briefing at Kinigi, then head into the forest, keeping an eye out for other primates such as black and white colobus monkeys, golden monkeys, and vervet monkeys, along with elephants, bushbucks, and birds.
Once you find your assigned gorilla group, spend one hour observing and photographing them. Return to the lodge for a late lunch and rest.
In the evening, visit the Gorilla Guardian Village for traditional dance performances, stories, and a taste of local dishes.
Day 3: Boat Ride on the Twin Lakes of Ruhondo and Burera, Drive to Kigali for a Flight to Nairobi
After hot drinks, fruit, and juice, set off for a boat ride on Lakes Ruhondo and Burera, at the foothills of the Sabyinyo and Muhabura Volcanoes. See local birds and fishermen, with insight into the lakes’ history from your guide.
Have lunch at the lodge or en route to Kigali City, then take your outbound flight to Nairobi, checking in for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4: Depart for Masai Mara National Reserve
Early morning departure for Masai Mara National Reserve in an open safari vehicle, via the Great Rift Valley area. Descend the escarpment and drive through Narok for lunch.
Start your game drive through Masai Mara, looking for lions, elephants, Masai giraffes, cape buffaloes, elands, topis, cheetahs, impalas, zebras, gazelles, and hippos. Close the day with dinner and overnight stay.
Day 5: Masai Mara Game Drive
Start early, the best time to see nocturnal animals such as cheetahs, lions, spotted hyenas, serval cats, leopards, caracals, and jackals.
Enjoy hot drinks and snacks, then drive through waterholes and riverbanks with good animal sightings. Return to camp for a late lunch and rest.
In the afternoon, join another game drive or a Masai village tour, then return to camp to close the day.
Day 6: Departure
