Detailed 11-Day Rwanda Safari Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali, Rwanda
Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, our safari guide will pick you up and transfer you to your chosen accommodation for an overnight stay.
Day 2: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park
Early in the morning, transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park in the southern province of Rwanda. The journey takes approximately 6 hours. Upon arrival, transfer to your lodge for overnight stay.
Day 3: Chimpanzee Trekking and Canopy Walk
Rise early to trek chimpanzees in the forest before they become active. Chimpanzees move quickly once awake, so it’s best to locate them early. Spend the afternoon on the only canopy walk in East Africa for an elevated view of Nyungwe Forest.
Day 4: Transfer to Gisenyi – Lake Kivu
Today, transfer to Gisenyi on Lake Kivu. Upon arrival, enjoy an afternoon boat ride and visit Coffee Island for local activities.
Day 5: Whole Day at Lake Kivu
Spend the day enjoying leisure activities on Lake Kivu, such as windsurfing, boat rides, cycling, and exploring Kibuye and Gisenyi towns in the evening.
Day 6: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Early morning, transfer to Volcanoes National Park in Musanze, home to Rwanda’s mountain gorillas. In the evening, visit the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo.
Day 7: Mountain Gorilla Trekking
After an early breakfast, head to Kinigi park headquarters for a briefing before trekking to see mountain gorillas. Trekking duration varies (2 to 8 hours), including a full hour with the gorillas. Return to the lodge in the evening.
Day 8: Golden Monkey Tracking and Dian Fossey Grave Visit
Trek golden monkeys in the morning and visit Dian Fossey’s grave in the afternoon. Dian Fossey, a pioneer in gorilla conservation, was buried next to her favorite gorilla, Digit.
Day 9: Transfer to Akagera National Park
Early breakfast, then transfer to Akagera National Park for an afternoon boat ride on Lake Ihema, Rwanda’s largest lake, to see crocodiles, hippos, and other aquatic wildlife.
Day 10: Whole Day at Akagera National Park
Enjoy a full day game drive in the northern part of the park, known for its high concentration of wildlife including lions, elephants, leopards, topis, waterbucks, and various bird species.
Day 11: Transfer to Kigali, City Tour, and Departure
Morning game drive as you exit the park, then drive to Kigali for a city tour. Later, transfer to Kigali International Airport for your departure.
