The Rongai route is the only route that ascends Kilimanjaro from the northeastern side of the mountain, along the border between Tanzania and Kenya. It is an ascend-only route that retains a sense of unspoilt wilderness and offers a different perspective on Kilimanjaro from the north.

Detailed 6-Day Kilimanjaro Rongai Route Climb Itinerary

Day 1: Rongai Gate to Rongai Cave

After breakfast, you will be picked up from your hotel in Arusha or Moshi and driven to Marangu Gate for registration, then continue to the Rongai Gate trailhead to start your climb to the roof of Africa. Climb gently through lush green rainforest, keeping an eye out for wildlife, especially black and white colobus monkeys. Continue until you leave the forest and arrive at Rongai Cave Camp for lunch and relaxation. Dinner and overnight at Rongai Cave Camp.

Day 2: Rongai Cave to Second Cave to Kikelewa Cave

After breakfast, make a steady ascent to Second Cave for a break and lunch. Continue trekking, leaving the main trail for a smaller path across the moorland leading toward the jagged Mawenzi peaks, arriving at

Kikelewa Camp in a sheltered valley. Dinner and overnight at Kikelewa Cave Camp.

Day 3: Kikelewa Cave to Mawenzi Tarn

After breakfast, continue your climb to Mawenzi Tarn on a short but steep trail up a grassy slope. Exit the heath zone and enter the Alpine Desert zone, where the landscape changes dramatically with striking views.

Reach Mawenzi Tarn in the afternoon for lunch with a view. Spend the rest of the day at leisure, taking in the sunset. Dinner and overnight at Mawenzi Tarn Hut.

Day 4: Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut

After breakfast, continue ascending west on a half day hike to Kibo Hut through the Saddle, formed between the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi. Reach Kibo Hut, sitting at the base of the Kibo crater wall. An early dinner is served so you can rest before your final ascent that night. Prepare your gear: headlamp, warm clothing, camera, insulated water, and hiking poles. Expect a very cold night.

Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

A wake up call as early as 23:30 hrs or midnight starts your final ascent to the summit in the dark, across a rocky path to Hans Meyer Cave. Take a short break, then continue on a steep climb to Gilman’s Point for another break, with a chance to witness a beautiful sunrise over the Mawenzi peak, weather permitting.

Finally, arrive at Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the roof of Africa. After taking in the view and capturing your summit photos, descend to Horombo Hut through Kibo Hut for rest and lunch. Dinner and overnight at Horombo Hut.

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

Enjoy your last breakfast on the mountain, then prepare for the final descent through the rainforest to Marangu Gate. On arrival, register and receive your summit certificate. Your driver will meet you and take you back to Arusha or Moshi for dinner and a well-deserved night’s sleep.
