Detailed Tanzania Zanzibar Family Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival and Transfer to Arusha Town
Our safari guide will promptly meet you upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (northern Tanzania). They will then drive you to an Arusha hotel where you will spend the night.
Day 2: Arusha to Tarangire National Park
After breakfast at the hotel, your safari guide will outline the schedule for the day. They will then drive you from Arusha town to Tarangire National Park, arriving just in time for lunch.
Here, you will embark on an afternoon game drive and return for dinner and overnight stay at a lodge of your choice.
The game drive at Tarangire National Park will introduce you to animals such as cheetahs, leopards, lions, elephants, oryxes, and lesser kudus, amidst panoramas of open acacia woodlands and savannah grasslands.
Day 3: Drive from Tarangire to Serengeti National Park, via Olduvai Gorge
Enjoy a hearty breakfast before departing for Serengeti National Park. You will pass through the spectacular Ngorongoro Conservation Area to the Maranja depression as you approach Olduvai Gorge. This gorge, desert-like in nature, is famous for remains of early human inhabitants dating back millions of years.
At the historic Olduvai Gorge, you will visit the famous skull of an early man believed to have lived 1.8 million years ago. His remains – the Zinjanthropus skull – were discovered by Dr. Leakey and his wife.
Continue to Serengeti National Park for afternoon game drives and lunch. Then, enjoy dinner and spend the night at a camp in the Seronera area.
Days 4 and 5: Serengeti National Park
Covering an area of 14,736 square kilometers, Serengeti National Park adjoins Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve.
It is Tanzania’s largest and Africa’s most famous national park, renowned as a major wildlife corridor hosting millions of migrating wildebeests throughout the year.
The park’s population includes various hoofed species such as zebras, topis, Grant’s gazelles, elands, klipspringers, roans, oryxes, oribis, impalas, giraffes, and warthogs, accompanied by predators like hyenas, leopards, and lions, among others.
Therefore, the two days spent in Serengeti National Park truly reflect exploration and natural beauty with morning and afternoon game drives.
Day 6: Transfer from Serengeti National Park to Ngorongoro Crater
En route to the spectacular Ngorongoro Conservation Area southeastward, enjoy stunning game viewing opportunities.
Spend the afternoon at the crater before having dinner and overnight stay at a lodge in Ngorongoro.
Ngorongoro Crater is an extraordinary sanctuary for some of Africa’s largest populations of large mammals.
Covering an area of 8,300 square kilometers, Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest volcanic caldera and arguably the most stunning arena.
The crater’s magnificence and mammal population have earned it a place on the list of Seven Natural Wonders of Africa.
Day 7: Ngorongoro Crater to Lake Manyara National Park
After breakfast, proceed to Lake Manyara National Park and participate in spectacular afternoon game drives. Ensure you carry packed lunch to avoid inconvenience.
Located on the floor of the Great Rift Valley, Lake Manyara is a shallow alkaline lake at the base of the magnificent western escarpment, explaining its beauty and serene setting.
Lake Manyara is renowned for birding opportunities and is also famous for hippopotamuses and tree-climbing lions.
Throughout the year, Lake Manyara hosts numerous flamingos and butterfly species. It also features savannahs, marshes, and acacia woodland vegetation.
Day 8: Depart Lake Manyara and Fly to Zanzibar
Before heading to Arusha town, enjoy a delicious breakfast. Have lunch in Arusha before proceeding to the airport for your flight to Zanzibar.
Upon arrival in Zanzibar, our professional guide will meet you and escort you to a beautiful beach resort, marking the beginning of your holiday.
Days 9 – 11: Leisure in Zanzibar
These days are dedicated to relaxation at a beach of your choice in Zanzibar. Enjoy activities such as scuba diving, nature walks, swimming, cultural tours, surfing, snorkeling, and more.
Visit Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and explore its historical sites and intricate labyrinths under the guidance of a local guide.
Nakupenda Sandbanks: Transfer to Prison Island via a wooden engine boat. Here, view giant tortoises, visit the ancient prison, and snorkel around the island, weather permitting. Conclude with a delicious lunch at the sandbank.
Spice Tour: Enjoy a spice plantation tour, discover various fruits, climb coconut trees, and taste Zanzibar’s diverse fruits.
Day 12: Fly to Kilimanjaro Airport. Departure
Your driver or safari guide will pick you up from the hotel and transfer you to Zanzibar Airport based on your flight schedule.
Connect to Kilimanjaro International Airport and bid farewell to East Africa, concluding your safari adventure.
