Detailed 6-Day Kilimanjaro Hiking Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Camp

Your driver guide will pick you up from your hotel in Arusha or Moshi after breakfast and drive you to Machame Gate for briefing and registration. From Umbwe Gate, with enough water and a packed lunch, begin your ascent into the rainforest, climbing sharply on a path that winds through dense forest, narrowing and steepening as you climb the ridge between two deep valleys.

Halfway through the trek, stop for lunch and a short break, then continue to reach Umbwe Camp in the late afternoon. The camp is set between thick undergrowth and huge trees, so expect a very cold night. Dinner and overnight at the camp.

Day 2: Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp

Wake up early, have breakfast, and start your trek to Barranco Camp. Today’s trail gets steeper as you exit the forest into the moorland, with spectacular views as you gain altitude. From the Umbwe ridge, the route flattens, then descends to Barranco Camp.

This camp tends to be crowded, since hikers from the Machame and Lemosho routes also camp here. Settle in, have lunch, and enjoy the views with the Barranco Wall right beside you. Dinner and overnight at the camp.

Day 3: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

After an early breakfast, tackle your first task of the day: climbing the Barranco Wall, which takes about an hour or more. No technical experience is needed, but you will use all fours to climb smoothly and go slow.

On reaching the top, take a short break to enjoy the view and take photos. From here, the hike features numerous ascents and descents on the way to Karanga Valley, with a sharp descent followed by one more climb to reach Karanga Camp. Have a hot lunch and rest for the remainder of the day. Dinner and overnight at the camp.

Day 4: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

After breakfast at Karanga Camp, turn left up the ridge as the route ascends toward Barafu, or “ice”, Camp. Prepare for a cold night here. Since you will attempt your final ascent to the summit that night, have an early dinner and get to bed early for rest. Prepare your equipment, hiking poles, and thermal clothing for the summit attempt.

Day 5: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

An early wake up call between 2300 hrs and 0000 hrs starts the final ascent to Uhuru Peak. Have hot tea and snacks, gear up, and start the trek. The ascent to the crater rim is the most challenging part of the trek, with a very steep trail until you reach Stella Point at 5,756m.

After a short break, continue to the summit, reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895m (19,341 ft) in about an hour or more. Time spent at the summit depends on weather conditions. Take a short rest, capture memorable photos, then descend to Mweka Camp with a stop at Barafu Camp for lunch. Dinner and overnight at Mweka Camp.

Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

After a fresh breakfast, continue your descent to Mweka Gate, where you will register and receive your summit certificate. Hikers who made it only to Stella Point also receive a certificate, still a great accomplishment.

After a hot lunch, your driver will take you back to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi for a well-deserved shower and rest.

Book this 6-Day Kilimanjaro Umbwe Route Climb today and take on the most challenging and scenic route to Uhuru Peak.
