Detailed 5-Day Simien Mountains Trekking Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Flight to Gondar, Drive to Simien Mountains
Arrive at Addis Bole International Airport, where our guide will welcome you and help with check-in for your flight to Gondar. On arrival, another team will meet you and drive you to the Simien Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Check into your lodge and head out to explore the escarpments. A key highlight here is the Gelada baboon, also called the “bleeding heart baboon,” found only in Ethiopia and seen here in large numbers. They gather thanks to plenty of grass, herbs, roots, grasshoppers, and locusts to eat.
After exploring, return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Trek from Sankaber to Geech
Begin your hike from Sankaber, following a ridge with views of the valleys below. The trail dips slightly into the valley, with views of the Jinbar River and its waterfalls.
Continue to Geech Village, where you will camp for the night.
Day 3: Trek from Geech to Imet Gogo to Siha Gorge to Keda Dit to Geech
After breakfast, continue across the grassy plateau, home to the giant lobelia plant.
The hike to Imet Gogo takes about two hours. From this viewpoint, at 3,926 meters above sea level, you get a full 360-degree view of the Simien Mountains.
Have lunch at Siha Gorge, then head back to Geech for dinner and overnight stay. If time allows, you can also take a sunset hike to Keda Dit.
Day 4: Trek from Geech to Innatye to Chennek
Today’s hike takes about seven hours through some of the best land in the Simien Mountains.
Head southeast toward Innatye, passing through hazel forest before reaching the Innatye viewpoint. Locals call this spot “Mama Mia” for its views.
After lunch, continue toward Chennek, where you have a chance to see the Walia ibex, found only in Ethiopia, and Gelada baboons.
Day 5: Chennek to Gondar
After breakfast at the campsite, hike for about two hours to the summit of Bwahit, the second highest peak in the Simien Mountains, at 4,430 meters above sea level.
After coming down, drive back to Gondar, where you will take a flight back to Addis Ababa for your departure home.
