Detailed 5-Day Kilimanjaro Marangu Route Climb Itinerary
Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Our company representative will pick you up from your hotel in Arusha or Moshi after breakfast and drive you to Marangu Gate. Complete all formalities, including registration, before starting your climb. Begin your ascent along a narrow trail through Kilimanjaro’s rainforest for most of the hike. Expect fog, rain, mud, and some wildlife, including monkeys.
Halfway through the trek, take a short break for lunch, then continue through the forest until you reach Mandara Hut, your first sleepover spot. Drinking water is available. Dinner and overnight at the hut.
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
After breakfast, continue your ascent through the forest until the trail leads into open moorland, where you will spot exotic plants like the giant lobelia and groundsel. Stop for a lunch break, and on a clear day, you may get your first views of the Kibo and Mawenzi peaks.
Continue your trek, arriving at Horombo Hut in the mid-afternoon. Relax and rest, and prepare for a cold night. Dinner and overnight at the hut.
Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
After breakfast, trek to Kibo Hut at the base of the Kibo crater wall. You will pass the last water point heading to the summit, so fill your bottles here or buy mineral water on arrival at Kibo Hut.
Settle in and relax. An early dinner is served so you can rest before attempting the final ascent that night. Dinner and overnight at Kibo Hut.
Day 4: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut
Your guide will wake you around 23:00 hrs for tea and biscuits before you begin your summit attempt. This portion of the trek is the most physically challenging, with plenty of stone scree and cold temperatures.
By dawn, you will reach Gilman’s Point (5,685m / 18,652 ft) on Kibo’s crater rim, with a chance to witness a spectacular sunrise, weather permitting. After a short break, continue the ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895m / 19,341 ft), the highest point on the African continent.
Take photos and enjoy the view, then descend to Kibo Hut for a hot lunch and a short break before continuing to Horombo Hut for your last dinner on the mountain.
Day 5: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
Have your last breakfast on the mountain, pack your bags, and descend to Marangu Gate through the tropical rainforest. On arrival, sign for departure, and those who reached the summit or Gilman’s Point will receive their certificates. Your driver will take you back to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi for dinner and overnight.
