Detailed 10-Day Kilimanjaro Hike and Zanzibar Beach Itinerary

Day 1: Arusha to Machame Gate, Machame Camp

After an early breakfast at your hotel in Arusha or Moshi, you will be picked up and driven to Machame Village, where you will receive your packed lunch and can buy mineral water. Depart for Machame Gate through coffee farms and local villages on the 45 minute drive. On arrival, complete registration, then start your ascent up the tallest mountain on the African continent.

The Machame route is quite scenic, so take time to enjoy the vegetation and views. The road gets muddy and slippery, so trekking poles and gaiters are recommended. Halfway through, take a short break for lunch, then proceed to Machame Camp, arriving in the evening with tents already set up by the porters. Dinner and overnight at the camp.

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Wake up to a cold morning on the mountain. After an early hot breakfast, leave the glades of the rainforest and continue on an ascending path up a steep, rocky ridge with stunning views. The vegetation transforms as altitude increases, with high altitude plants like Lobelia deckenii and Senecio kilimanjari beginning to appear.

Just below the Shira Plateau, take a short break for lunch, then continue to the plateau for rewarding views of the mountain and Kibo glaciers. Reach Shira Camp within a few hours. Dinner and overnight at the camp.

Day 3: Shira Camp (Lava Tower) to Barranco Camp

Wake up to hot tea or coffee and beautiful views of the Shira Plateau. Continue your ascent east on the expansive plateau, an important day for acclimatization. Your first milestone is the junction for the Shira and Lemosho routes, with a detour option via the Lava Tower for faster hikers.

Stop for lunch and a short rest, then descend gradually to Barranco Camp, passing through different vegetation zones. The camp sits in a valley close to the Great Barranco Wall. Dinner and overnight at the camp.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp

Wake up to the sight of the Great Barranco Wall, your obstacle for the day. After breakfast, make your way up this steep but manageable climb. Reaching the top in about 1 to 2 hours, descend sharply into the greener Karanga Valley.

One more climb brings you to Karanga Camp for lunch and a short break before continuing to Barafu, or “ice”, Camp. At this point, you will have completed the South Circuit, with views of the summit from different angles. The summit is now a further 1,345m up, and you will make the final ascent that same night. Early dinner and early to bed for rest.

Day 5: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Mweka Camp

A wake up call around 23:30 hrs or midnight, followed by tea and biscuits, sends you into the night heading northwest, ascending through heavy scree toward Stella Point, then continuing to Uhuru Peak at 5,895m (19,341 ft), typically through snow the whole way.

At Uhuru Peak, take photos and enjoy the stunning surrounding views. Time on the summit depends on weather conditions, so make the most of your greatest accomplishment of the trip.
Descend to Mweka Camp with a lunch break and a brief rest stop at Barafu Camp. Dinner and overnight at Mweka Camp.

Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

On your final day at the mountain, continue your descent to Mweka Park Gate after breakfast. Sign for and receive your summit certificate, then travel to Mweka Village for lunch before heading to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi for celebrations, a well-deserved shower, and rest.

Day 7: Depart for Zanzibar

Take a flight to Zanzibar Island. Our driver will meet you at the airport and take you to your beach hotel, resort, or spa. Check in and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure, reflecting on your Kilimanjaro summit success.

Days 8 and 9: Zanzibar Beach Holiday

Enjoy 2 days of beach life at the beautiful white sand beaches of Zanzibar. Explore the beach and discover why Zanzibar is called paradise, with amenities at your resort, beach walks, windsurfing, kite flying, diving, and snorkeling. Optional excursions at extra cost include a Stone Town Tour, Spice Tour, and Prison Island Tour.

Day 10: Departure

Wake up to the cool morning breeze from the Indian Ocean. After breakfast, your driver will pick you up from your beach hotel and drop you at the airport for your flight home.
