Detailed 4-Day Danakil Depression Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Flight to Semera, Erta Ale

Arrive at Semera Airport, where our guide will welcome you and give you a briefing on the tour and Ethiopia in general. Drive to Erta Ale, stopping for lunch in the town of Afdera, with good views of the Erta Ale volcano.

Continue through the desert until you reach basalt rock formed by old lava flows. The ride is slow and bumpy. On arrival at your accommodation, have dinner and overnight rest.

After dinner, take an optional 30 minute hike to the Erta Ale crater. The hike is mostly flat, but bring a walking stick and a torch.

Day 2: Drive from Erta Ale to Dallol

Have breakfast while watching the sunrise over the lava lake. After breakfast, drive to Dallol on a mostly bumpy road through the desert.

Stop at a palm grove for lunch. In the afternoon, drive to Ahmedela, a small settlement where salt mined in the area is prepared for transport to processing towns. See large camel herds and caravans here, with a good sunset view to end the day.

Day 3: Drive from Dallol to Afdera

After breakfast, drive to the salt domes of Dallol. This area has colorful geothermal pools, formed by mineral deposits in the ground. Explore the geysers and sulfur pools too.

Spend the morning exploring the land at Dallol. Later, drive toward Afdera, stopping at the salt canyons to see locals mine salt by hand and load it onto camels for transport. The salt flat here covers about 1,200 square kilometers.

Stop for lunch at the hot springs, where you can swim or shower. Locals believe the mineral-rich water is good for the skin.

Day 4: Afdera to Allalobad to Semera

After breakfast, drive to the Allalobad geothermal site, also known as the Water of Allah. In the afternoon, drive back to Semera for your flight to Addis Ababa.
