Mombasa was penetrated by colonial influence leading to promotion of European cultures in the town and other islands in Kenya. In the early 1900s, the railway line from Mombasa to Uganda was completed and still remains the main landmark in Mombasa’s history today. Mombasa served as a capital of the British East Africa Protectorate from 1887 to 1907.

Lake Natron is a magnificent salt/Alkaline Lake in the Gregory Rift, which is the Eastern arm of the East African Rift valley. This alkaline straddles within the Lake Natron Basin, a Ramsar Site wetland of international importance. Lake Natron is fed by the Ewaso Ng’iro River to the south, an area that rises in Central Kenya and by mineral endowed hot springs.

Unlike other lakes, Lake Natron is generally shallow with a depth of not more than 3m/9.8ft and its width various significantly depending on its level of water. This salt lake extends for 57kms long and 22kms wide, rising on a surface elevation of 600m.

Kampala, the largest city in Uganda, is also its capital, covering a total surface area of 189 km2 (73 square miles). Out of this, 176 km2 (68 square miles) is land, and 13 km2 (5.0 square miles) is water. Kampala is situated approximately 35 km from the airport.

Originally built on seven hills, Kampala expanded to encompass major divisions such as Kampala, Kawempe Division, Makindye Division, Nakawa Division, and Division. Kampala’s metropolitan area, which comprises districts such as Kampala, Wakiso District, Mukono District, Mpigi District, and Luweero District, is administratively managed.

The original seven hills of Kampala, namely Old Kampala Hill, Mengo Hill, Kibuli Hill, Namirembe Hill, Lubaga Hill, Nsambya Hill, and Nakasero Hill, remain tourist attractions. Kampala city is geographically composed of hilly places with valleys filled with sluggish rivers and swamps. The highest point is the summit of Kololo hill, standing at 1,311 metres (4,301 ft), located in the center of the city, and the lowest point at the shores of Lake Victoria south of the city center, standing at an altitude of 1,135 metres (3,724 ft).

Kampala’s weather has two annual wet seasons with rains in the months of February to May and September to December. However, with climate change, this trend seems to be changing.

Regarding transport within Kampala, the city is a 45-minute drive from Entebbe International Airport and also has Kajjansi Airstrip where local flights are usually arranged from. There is also Kololo Airstrip in the city center, often used to run and coordinate government activities.

Imbabazi orphanage: This orphanage was established in 1994 by an American woman called Rosamond Carr. It is a home to over 100 orphans, the Imbabazi orphanage take care of the children and it also helps to reunite them with their family members. A visit to this home of hope can surely be humbling and rewarding.

Kibuye genocide memorial center: This memorial site is near a church in Kibuye where a great massacre slaughter took place during the genocide time. This place has a number of physical presentations of the remains of people during the genocide era. A tour around this place gives a lifetime experience as one gets to know about the Rwanda history.

Napoleon Island: Interestingly, this island was named after Napoleon Bonaparte because the island is shaped like the hat of Bonaparte. This island has numerous fauna for example the African giant millipedes, Colony of bats and numerous water birds.

Located within the scenic Lake Victoria is a beautiful Ngamba Island, one of the magical tropical islands in Africa. The scenic Ngamba Island forms part of the stunning Koome Archipelago and it is surrounded by the peaceful Lake Victoria water. Entirely, the tropical island is set for the orphaned chimpanzees making it an outstanding spot worth visiting on safari in Uganda.

Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary shelters up to 52 chimpanzees in its vast 404.605sq.m tropical forest. Chimpanzees at Ngamba Island can be spotted roaming in the 95-acre forest area and in addition to the rescued chimps, the tropical island also protects over 120 species of birds, otters and monitor lizards.

Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary derives its name from Ngamba Island and the sanctuary was founded in 1997. Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and Wildlife Conservation Trust among other organizations rescued the chimpanzees which were poached or smuggled. Today, the sanctuary acts as an important platform for locals and foreign tourists to have in-depth learning about chimpanzees. While Ngamba Island is more of a forest, the Northern part (3800m elevation) features some patches of grassland.

Getting to Ngamba Island

Ngamba Island is located South-east of Entebbe on Lake Victoria about 23kms away and accessible by speed boat for about 45 minutes. Using a traditional motorized canoe, Ngamba Island is reachable about one and half hours’ drive.

Chimpanzees in Uganda

Over 5050 chimpanzees survive within Uganda alone, the highest chimpanzee population though for the previous 30 years, their numbers have kept on reducing. Chimpanzees are among the most threatened species especially due to habitat loss, poaching etc. Ngamba Island plays an important part in protecting the many rescued chimps from poachers or smugglers with currently sheltering up to 52 orphaned chimpanzees.

Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary is run by Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Wildlife Conservation Trust and it works together with other organizations such as Uganda Wildlife Education Center, Uganda Wildlife Society, International Fund for Animal Welfare and Born Free Foundation, Environmental Conservation Trust of Uganda, Jane Goodall Institute.

Other than Ngamba Island, chimpanzees in Uganda also thrive in Budongo Forest, Kalinzu Forest, Kibale National Park, Toro-Semuliki Wildlife Reserve, Uganda Wildlife Education Centre, Maramagambo Forest, Kyambura Gorge etc.

Visiting Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary

Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary’s main objective is to educate the public on the value of conserving/protecting chimpanzees and their habitats. Your visit to the Sanctuary plays an important part since it is one main source in which the management generates finances for facilitating the daily activities of taking care of these endangered species.

Visiting Ngamba costs USD 115 per person for half day tour on a speed boat, USD 80 for a motor boat and USD 200 is for “caregiver for a day” experience. There are different shifts with the first starting at 9:00am up to 12:45pm while the second one ends at 5:00pm. Feeding is often conducted starting at 11:00am and 2:30pm.

Caregiver for day experience is available for visitors in need to spend a night or more at the Ngamba Island. The experience involves having a deep understanding about chimpanzees, keep them happy and in their good health, feeding, cleaning their chambers etc. Participants shall be required to conduct a thorough medical test.

Long stay visitor program

Long stay visitor programme is ideal for holidaymakers who desire spending more days at Ngamba Island. This includes assisting the team at Ngamba Island in building projects, cleaning chimp cages, treating chimps, preparing food, collect data, analyze date etc.

Stone Town is the capital of Zanzibar, an archipelago in Tanzania, East Africa. The town is also often known as “Mji Mkongwe,” a Kiswahili term meaning “old town.” The name of the town was later changed to Shangani fishing village and then eventually became known as Zanzibar.

The first inhabitants of Zanzibar were the local Bantu people, with remains dating back to the 6th century found at Fukuchani. Evidence indicates that early inhabitants were agriculturalists and a fishing community. The town later became a center for the East African slave trade, attracting different ethnicity to the islands for hundreds of years.

One of the unique features of Stone Town is its architecture. Almost all doors in Zanzibar have different designs influenced by Indian, Persian, African, British, and Arab styles. The streets of Stone Town are very narrow, requiring visitors to explore on foot or with a donkey.

There are many activities to enjoy while in Stone Town, including:

• Arab Old Fort: One of the historical sites in Stone Town is the Arab Old Fort, built by Omani Arabs in 1699 after expelling the Portuguese from the islands. The fort was later used as a prison in the 19th century and then became a Zanzibar railway terminal. Today, tourists visit the Arab Old Fort to learn about its history, and locals sell various items in the courtyard.
• House of Wonders: The House of Wonders, also known as the Palace of Wonders, is the largest and tallest building in Stone Town. Built by Barghash Bin Said, it was the first building in Zanzibar with electricity and the first in East Africa to have an elevator. The sultan ensured the main door was wide enough for him to ride an elephant through it, and animals were once chained in front of the building for display.
• Forodhani Gardens: Forodhani Gardens, also known as Jubilee Gardens, is located in Stone Town. These gardens may look ordinary during the day but come alive at night. If you enjoy delicious cuisine, this is a must-visit spot, where both locals and tourists gather in the evenings to enjoy a variety of continental dishes. Don’t forget to try the famous Zanzibar pizza!
• Visit the Old Slave Market: The old slave market of Stone Town is now a UNESCO-funded World Heritage Site. Stone Town was a center for slaves brought from different parts of East Africa. From the 18th to the 19th century, over 50,000 slaves were sold in this market every year. Today, the slave market site has been transformed into an Anglican Cathedral.
• Palace Museum: The current palace replaced the old one that was destroyed during the Anglo-Zanzibar War. It later served as the Sultan’s family residence and was used as a government seat in 1964. Now a museum, it exhibits the royal family’s artifacts, offering tourists insights into life in Zanzibar in the 19th century.
• Freddie Mercury’s House: Freddie Mercury, a famous singer and songwriter, was known worldwide for his talent. Although he relocated to Europe, he was born and raised in Zanzibar. Fans of his music can visit his childhood home and learn about his early life.
• Prison Island: Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, is about 6 kilometers from Stone Town. In the 1860s, it was used for rebellious slaves. A British minister later built a prison complex on the island, but no slaves were ever imprisoned there; instead, it served as a quarantine site for yellow fever patients. Today, it is home to giant tortoises.
• Spice Tour: Zanzibar has long been known as the “Spice Islands” due to its thriving spice industry. Spices have been grown on the islands for many years, and visitors can tour spice plantations to learn about different kinds of spices. The island produces nutmeg, cloves, ginger, garlic, cinnamon, black pepper, red pepper, and more.
• Coastal Beaches: Zanzibar’s white sand beaches and turquoise waters provide the perfect place to relax after a Tanzanian safari or for honeymooners. Stone Town is close to several beautiful beaches and resorts for a relaxing getaway.

His widow resumed work, but it was later completed by a prominent Indian who converted the lower floor to a dispensary and the upper floors to apartments.
• Snorkeling: Snorkeling in Zanzibar is a popular activity, with many spots available in the Indian Ocean. Visitors can see diverse marine life, including green turtles, seahorses, crocodile fish, octopuses, humpback whales, trumpet fish, porcelain crabs, white-tip reef sharks, mantis shrimp, frogfish, dolphins, cuttlefish, and more.
• Scuba Diving: Divers visiting Stone Town shouldn’t miss the opportunity to scuba dive around the Zanzibar islands. Some diving spots can be accessed by boat, while others are near the shores.

Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park

Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park is the only national park in Zanzibar, covering 50 square kilometers. The park is home to around 40 species of birds, 50 species of butterflies, and several animal species. The Zanzibar red colobus monkey, also known as Kirk’s red colobus monkey, is endemic to the islands and was named after Sir John Kirk, who introduced it to zoological science. The Zanzibar leopard, once considered extinct, was seen in footage from an American documentary, indicating it may still exist.

Jozani was first established as a forest reserve by the colonial government in 1952, later becoming a nature reserve and finally being designated a national park in 2004. Visitors can take nature walks or a mangrove walk in Jozani Forest. Walks typically last 45 minutes to 2 hours, making it ideal for a day trip. Entry fees are paid at the entrance, after which tourists are assigned a guide who will lead them on a walk, providing insights into birds, plants, and wildlife.

Jozani has been designated as a birding area by BirdLife International. Bird enthusiasts can spot species like the long-tailed cormorant, African jacana, African darter, crested francolin, fulvous whistling duck, lesser flamingo, greater flamingo, white-backed duck, helmeted guineafowl, African palm swift, ring-necked dove, little swift, emerald-spotted wood dove, African pygmy goose, square-tailed nightjar, African crake, golden plover, Madagascar cuckoo, water thick-knee, African swamphen, black-bellied plover, Senegal lapwing, Pacific golden plover, African wood owl, black-headed heron, white-headed vulture, African sacred ibis, cattle egret, squacco heron, masked booby, white-tailed tropicbird, and broad-billed sandpiper, among others.
