A perfect composition of undulating hills, lush forest, unique mammals, and magnificent moorland define what Aberdare National park is; one of the famous national parks in the Republic of Kenya in the continent of Africa. Flora and Fauna, breathtaking landscape, primates, ridges, and captivating waterfalls among others, make each moment at the park unforgettable. The park’s climate is breathtaking, very conducive both day and night, except when the rains arrive with a strong coldness that calls for warm clothing.

Aberdare national park is situated about 100km north of Nairobi city; one of Kenya’s top cities; sprawling through approximately 766sqkm of land and about 4,000metres above sea level. Most of its land is occupied by the Aberdare mountain range, and V-shaped valleys, overlapped by waterfalls, bamboo forests, rivers, and moorlands among others.

In 1950, a vacant space by the names; Aberdare game reserve was gazetted and given a national park status, with the primary reason of protecting Aberdare mountains, its occupants namely; mammals, birds, plants, and the entire ecosystem. Though smaller than the rest of the other parks, Aberdare national park prides on a diversity of wildlife species such as the rare black rhinos, its volcanic ranges that run from Ol Donyo Lesatima to the summit of Kinangop, but not forgetting the scenic rising moorlands at 9,842 feet. The park’s fertile volcanic soils enable the plants and vegetation to thrive in all seasons.

There is no age limit of accessing the park because everyone needs to make history and explore.

On air, you can chatter a plane from Jomo Kenyatta international airport in Nairobi, to the Mweiga airstrip located a few kilometers from the Park Headquarters. Nanyuki and Mweiga are the two airstrips serving the park.

Aberdare national park, with its forest cover and wide space, offers asylum to a wide range of animal species; both prey and predators, of all sizes, colors, and ages. Some of those to mention include; the giant forest hog, warthogs, lions, Cape buffaloes, the African civet cats, leopards, the blue duiker, the golden cat, bush backs, spotted hyenas, spotted hyenas, African wild cats, and the black Rhinos among others, primates such as the olive baboon, white Columbus monkeys, and many.

During the game drives, picnic experience, nature walk, birding among others is when one encounters the different not residents in their territories hunting, resting, or grazing. If not a full-day game viewing, then you can spend approximately 3-4 hours game drive, traversing the wilderness since these animals are not enclosed in one specific place. However be informed that no matter how far the animals are, avoid over speeding unless permitted because that can endanger other park inhabitants.

Landscape.

At Aberdare national park, only the layout of the landscape takes up visitors’ attention and time. Side by side lye a line of rolling hills marked by green vegetation and unique plant species. Visitors tend to get more of this while on a photo moment, guided nature walks, and game drives among others.

Water makes it even more unique are the water bodies at the boundaries which give it the most magnificent outlook. You need to visit for a personal experience.

Birds in the park.

Research indicates a presence of over 250 rare bird species in the park; asylum seekers, endemic and non-endemic, thus a reason giving you a perfect destination for spotting your favorite bird species, and learning their unique characteristics. Some of the most notable ones include among others; eagles, Jackson’s Francolin, plovers, sparrow hawks, sunbirds, goshawks, Aberdare cisticola, the endangered Sharpe’s Longclaw, Hindi’s Babbler, Abbott’s starling, orange ground thrush, the red-chested owlet, and the long-tailed cuckoo among others.

Birding watching is best done in the morning when they have just risen or in the afternoon hours as they rest or quench their thirst. Nonetheless, experts are at the park to lead you through the designated trails, offering asylum to a variety of bird species known and unknown to you.

Cultural diversity around the park.

Cultural enthusiasts can find their experiences enhanced after exploring the park, in the surrounding communities. The local natives entertain visitors through dance, local village tours, stories, and drama among others. One of those cultures you will not want to miss is that of the Kikuyu people, and the Maasai warriors; famous herdsmen in the region, with an unbroken bond of cattle. Rise into the occasion as the first voice releases the first native words or song among others.

It is also important that while you are with these locals, you fully appreciate their culture, engage in the activities where need be, interact freely, and support them through funding their activities or purchasing souvenirs.

ACCOMMODATION IN AND AROUND THE PARK.

If you want to experience the park exclusively, and even spend a night or more. The available accommodations range from Luxury, mid-range to Budget hotels, treetop lodges, ark-like facilities, and campsites among others, though the campsites tend to be a season, or offered on order, with most of the services provided by you such as food, and bedding.

The notable lodge facilities include among others; Fishing lodge Aberdare, Reedbuck campsite, shamata campsite, PC Hajis campsite, Honi Campsite, Bill Woodley campsite, and Muringato. It is recommendable that once you intend to lodge at the park, book for accommodation at least three and so months in advance because, in high seasons, the demand beats the available space.

BEST TIME OF VISITING ABERDARE NATIONAL PARK.

Though the climatic condition of Kenya is one of the best in the continent of Africa, it is wise to pick its most suitable months for a safari to the park. Aberdare national is hilly, with a large chunk of land occupied by forest covers which greatly influence the weather patterns. However, we recommend the months of June to October and December to February because the park is relatively dry, allowing for many activities with no interruptions.

However, Budget travelers, can pick the months of March to May and then November because of the discount offers in both the park and tourist facilities.

Even though the dry seasons aren’t the best, they come with the advantage of having countless chances of spotting the mammals producing, capturing the beautiful green pastures, enjoying less congested parks and also enjoying the beautiful green scenery rolling across the Park.

Aberdare national park is all about adventure, uniqueness, and surprises. As the name; the park is a hidden treasure, which makes tourists also make return visits, and perfectly celebrate their lives. The park offers value for many, with each direction having one or more attractions be encountered. Book for your safari today and enjoy each moment.

Tsavo East National Park is an educational site for those who want to expand their knowledge. No matter how much they know, travelers are eager to learn more, as traveling is all about discovering new things.

The park offers numerous attractions, including:

Munda Rock: This rock serves as a water catchment spot that supplies water to natural dams and other areas where animals can drink. Munda Rock’s elevation allows tourists to stand on its peak and view animals like buffaloes, rhinos, giraffes, elephants, and antelopes as they move around.

Lugard Falls: Named after British explorer and colonial administrator Frederick Lugard, who arrived in Mombasa in 1888, these falls are a spectacular cascade formed through erosion, which has left a rocky steep slope where water flows into a plunge pool. Water rapids form as water flows over hard rocks that resist erosion, attracting tourists from around the world.

Yatta Plateau: Known as the world’s longest lava flow, spanning 290 kilometers, Yatta Plateau was formed due to an eruption and features formations like Oldoinyo Sabuk Mountain. It extends from the border of Tsavo National Park to Athi River, drawing tourists interested in its flat, elevated terrain.

Kanderi Swamp: Located along the Voi River, this swamp attracts various animals with its flowing water source and cool air. Lions often rest near the swamp, spending time by the river’s shores. Tourists on game drives have the chance to observe lions drinking water in large groups.

Galana and Tsavo Rivers: These rivers feed the park and its ecosystem. Tsavo River runs through Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks before joining Athi River to form the Galana River. Rivers generally progress through three stages: the youthful stage (with fast-flowing water), the mature stage (with less erosion), and the old stage (where deposition occurs). The Galana River flows into the Indian Ocean and is home to crocodiles, which many tourists enjoy viewing.

Aruba Dam: Built in 1952, this reservoir is one of many water sources within Tsavo National Park, providing vital resources for animals during dry periods.

Wildlife: Tsavo East is home to an impressive variety of animals, making it one of Kenya’s premier wildlife destinations. The park hosts birds such as the Gray Crowned Crane, Saddle-billed Stork, Martial Eagle, and Yellow-necked Spurfowl. Mammals include elephants, African hunting dogs, African wildcats, warthogs, zebras, civets, striped and spotted hyenas, bat-eared foxes, African hares, and primates like monkeys and yellow baboons.

Entry Fees

Kenyan Citizens: Adults pay 515 Kshs, while children pay 215 Kshs.

Kenyan Residents: Same fees as citizens.

Non-Residents: Adults pay 52 USD, and children pay 35 USD.

Before entering, a tour guide or experienced officer provides tourists with instructions they must follow within the park. Available activities include:

Birdwatching: Tsavo East is home to many bird species, whose twittering welcomes visitors at the park’s entrance. Migratory birds visit during specific times, staying two to three months before returning home. The best birdwatching season is the rainy season when birds breed. Some bird species found here include Papyrus Gonolek, River Warbler, Ostrich, Martial Eagle, Casmerodius albus, and African Finfoot.

Cultural Tours: Many national parks are located near the Maasai communities, allowing tourists to explore their unique lifestyle.

Game Drives: These drives are conducted in open-roof safari vans and offered in three shifts: morning (ideal when tourists are fresh and active), evening (lasting 2–4 hours to see shy animals), and full-day drives (with packed lunches eaten at designated stops).

Accommodations

Accommodations within the park cater to various budgets:

Luxury Accommodations:

Featuring ample parking, fine restaurants, and rooms with inviting scents, these lodges encourage tourists to extend their stay.

Ashnil Aruba Lodge

The beauty of Tsavo National Park is indescribable. Today, just fly, roam, travel, discover, explore, and journey to Tsavo West National Park, a region covered with plants that have deep, wide roots, allowing them to absorb water from great depths to survive during the dry seasons.

The park is also covered with green grass that turns brown in the hot seasons. This type of vegetation is referred to as savanna vegetation.

Grassland vegetation serves as a grazing area for various animals such as zebras, gazelles, giraffes, buffaloes, rhinos, and more.

The park is also home to lions that have adapted to this vegetation, where they hide in the tall grass when tired or while targeting prey.

The lion’s skin color blends into the landscape, making them difficult for other animals to detect.

Lions use their golden color and night vision to outmaneuver other species in the bush. Tsavo also shelters leopards, tigers, reptiles, and primates.

The entry fees are 515 KSh for citizen adults, 215 KSh for children, and 52 USD for foreign adults, while foreign children pay 35 USD.

Tourist Activities – Top Things to Do

There are many exciting activities to enjoy in Tsavo, including:

Camping: Camping consists of groups setting up in specific areas of the park, typically in the morning or at night. In some national parks, visitors can either rent a tent or stay in a luxury, tent-like structure. Camping is often accompanied by a fire to provide light and warmth for night campers. Tourists can book private campsites based on their budget, while others prefer public camping to interact with other travelers.

Interaction with the Inhabitants of the Land: The Manyattas are unique structures that capture tourists’ attention. Visitors can watch the sun dip over the horizon around a fire lit by the Maasai people and observe village warriors dancing to attract potential wives. Drinks and snacks often accompany this viewing experience.

Game Drives: Game drives are one of the most popular activities, as they offer safety within a vehicle and can be enjoyed in the morning or afternoon. Tourists can spot animals heading to their resting places or preparing to hunt.

Accommodation

The park offers accommodations with lavish interiors, comfortable rooms, ample parking, quality restaurants, and clean facilities. Recommended hotels include Lion Bluff Lodge, Rhino Valley Lodge, Severin Kitani Bandas Lodge, and Hunters Lodge.

History and Transport

Tsavo West National Park was established in 1948 to protect the wildlife in the Thar Desert. It is the largest park in Kenya, covering coastal regions with swamps, rocky peaks, and an extinct volcanic crater.

The recommended means of transportation are by road or air, though airstrips may close during wet seasons due to strong winds and thunderstorms.

Most tourists visit in the dry season to avoid these challenges, while those who prefer fewer crowds can visit year-round.

Recommended Packing List

Safari Clothes: Comfortable clothing in dull colors is recommended to avoid attracting insects. Long-sleeved clothing is also suggested to protect against the sun and insects.

Sunglasses and Hats: These protect the eyes and face from the sun. Visitors from colder climates may need time to adjust to the intense heat, making sunglasses and hats essential.

Insect Repellent: This is advised due to the presence of mosquitoes and other insects, which can cause discomfort. Always use insect repellent for a pleasant stay.

Park Rules and Safety Guidelines

Keep the Park Clean: Littering is strictly prohibited, as animals may ingest waste, which could harm them.

Maintain Silence: Animals are sensitive to noise. Visitors should be quiet to avoid disturbing or frightening them.

Maintain Safe Distances: During nature walks, keep a safe distance from animals, especially large mammals like elephants, which can become aggressive.

Avoid Feeding Animals: Feeding wildlife, especially carnivores, is prohibited as it may lead to unpredictable behavior. Always stay with a tour guide and security personnel equipped with a firearm for safety.

Attractions

The attractions at Tsavo West National Park include diverse wildlife, historical sites, interactions with the Maasai people, and much more.

Now is the perfect time to explore, and Tsavo West National Park is the ideal destination for you.

The post Discover Samburu National Reserve – Kenya’s Unique Wildlife & Cultural Experience appeared first on Magical Gorilla Adventures.

Samburu National Park covers an area of 165 square kilometers in Kenya. Established in 1985, it is characterized by thick riverine forests, doum palm mangroves, mountains, acacia woodlands, thorn trees, grasslands, rivers, and swamps. The park’s altitude ranges from 800 to 1,230 meters above sea level.

The Samburu Reserve falls within ecological zone V, classified as arid and semi-arid, with a moisture index of 42 to 57, indicating that evapotranspiration exceeds available moisture. Daytime temperatures are extremely hot, while nights are very cold. The annual mean temperatures range from 18°C to 30°C, with an average annual rainfall of 354 mm.

This national reserve is famously where conservationists George and Joy Adamson raised Elsa the lioness, as featured in the award-winning book and film Born Free. The reserve derives its name from the local tribe known as the “Samburu,” which means “Butterfly.” The tribe got its name due to the striking patterns they paint on their faces to accentuate their features.

Samburu National Reserve is also known for the lioness Kamunyak, who became famous for adopting oryx calves. The tribes living in the surrounding areas include the Samburu, Borana, and Rendile. The name Ewaso Ng’iro is derived from a local Samburu word meaning “River of Brown Water.”

Entry Fees

Entry fees for Samburu National Reserve are $70 for adult non-residents, $40 for non-resident children, 1,000 Kshs for Kenyan adult citizens, and 500 Kshs for Kenyan citizen children. Camping at the park costs $12 per person per night. Entry fees may change annually, so it’s advisable to inquire before traveling.

History

The Samburu National Reserve was first visited by Von Hohnel in the 1860s, who described it as teeming with abundant wildlife, especially buffalo and rhinos. Later, the reserve attracted hunters such as Arthur Newmann.

Initially gazetted as part of the larger Marsabit National Reserve in 1948, Samburu National Reserve was separated and established in 1962 with financial help from the Elsa Trust. This initiative followed a suggestion by the senior game warden of Samburu District, Rodney Elliot.

Location

Samburu Game Reserve is located in the southeastern corner of Samburu County, in Kenya’s Rift Valley Province. It is bordered by the Ewaso Ng’iro River, with Buffalo Springs National Reserve on the other side of the river. The reserve is 347 kilometers from Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. Flights are also available twice daily from Nairobi to Buffalo Springs and Samburu, taking about 45 minutes to an hour.

Best Time to Visit

Samburu National Reserve can be visited year-round, though the best time for wildlife viewing is from June to October when the vegetation is less dense, and animals gather around water sources. Birdwatchers are encouraged to visit from November to May when migratory birds from North Africa and Europe are present.

Shaba and Buffalo Springs National Reserves

Shaba and Buffalo Springs National Reserves are also located along the Ewaso Ng’iro River, forming the largest conservation area in Kenya alongside Samburu National Reserve.

Nairobi National Park – The establishment of Nairobi National Park was a visionary achievement, brought to fruition in 1966 after displacing the Maasai people, who are believed to be the original inhabitants of the land. The Maasai have a strong attachment to their culture, which has attracted many historians, researchers, and tourists.

This majestic national park is located south of Nairobi’s center. Although setting up a park near the capital seemed initially questionable, it addressed the ongoing conflict between humans and wildlife, as some carnivores encroached on human land and preyed on livestock, leading to retaliatory killings.

The park hosts a wide variety of species, including lions, leopards, tigers, giraffes, elephants, rhinos, buffaloes, antelopes, wild foxes, zebras, cheetahs, hyenas, hippos, impalas, monkeys, baboons, gorillas, and various bird species such as ostriches, red-eyed doves, gray crowned cranes, Namaqua doves, secretary birds, laughing doves, and white-browed coucals, to name just a few.

The Ivory Burning Site and Picnic Area: Established by former President Daniel Arap Moi on July 18, 1989, this historical site is where over 2,000 elephant tusks weighing 12 tonnes were burned to condemn poaching. The ashes serve as a monument, and the site includes picnic facilities and lavatories.

The best time to visit the park is during the dry season, when animals gather around waterholes and rivers. From June to September, tourists may even spot shy and rare animals.

The park not only hosts people but also a variety of animal species, including:

Lions: These majestic creatures roam the park, often hunting weaker animals as part of their carnivorous diet. Known for their speed, they chase their prey to exhaustion. With sharp claws and pointed teeth, lions can grip and tear apart their catch. Lion species here include the Northeast Congo lion, African lioness, Katanga lion in Southwest Africa, and the white lion found at Kruger National Park in South Africa, among others.

Elephants: Massive and grey, elephants mainly feed on grass but are sometimes challenged by fearless lions. Lions attack in groups, leading to intense battles that can leave both sides injured.

Turtles: Known for their slow pace, turtles rely on their hard shells for protection.

Cheetahs: These fast animals are considered the swiftest in the wild, even outrunning lions.

Tourists can enter the park after paying an entry fee of 70 USD for foreigners, while children pay 20 USD. The fee may vary depending on the season, and children under five can enter for free.

Hot Air Balloon Safari: This unique activity lets you soar through the sky, enjoying the refreshing breeze while observing the park’s wildlife from above.

Camping: Camping is an exciting adventure, but following instructions, especially at night, is essential to avoid encounters with wildlife. Many animals hunt day and night, so adhering to guidelines is crucial.

Nature Walks: This activity can be viewed as either physical exercise or an adventure. It provides the chance to walk among animals, at a safe distance to avoid startling them.

Masai Mara National Park is open throughout the year. Some visitors prefer the dry season when animals are more active and cross from Serengeti National Park through the Mara River into Masai Mara.

Others enjoy visiting during the wet season, favoring road trips while airstrips are closed.

Families often gather to explore architectural sites along the route to the park.

Key Attractions at the Park

Mara River: This river serves as a crossing point for animals during the dry season, facilitating migration from Serengeti National Park to Masai Mara. Many tourists gather here to capture memorable moments of this foreign land.

Kenya is one of Africa’s premier safari destinations, with almost all national parks boasting Africa’s Big Five, beautiful scenery, indigenous people with unique cultures, abundant birdlife, and the great wildebeest migration—one of the world’s most remarkable natural occurrences.

Nakuru Town

Nakuru town is the largest urban area in Kenya after Nairobi and Mombasa. It’s located in the Rift Valley province. It was established as part of the “White Highlands” by the British colonial government.

Lake Nakuru National Park

Lake Nakuru National Park is situated on the floor of the Great Rift Valley, covering an area of 188 square kilometers, 27 percent of which is comprised of Lake Nakuru. The lake was designated a Ramsar site, although it is threatened by human activities.

The national park derives its name from Lake Nakuru, which covers a large portion of the park. “Nakuru” translates to mean “dust” or “dusty” in the local Maasai language. The nearby town is also named Nakuru.

The park stands at an elevation of 1,754 meters above sea level. Its shores are lined by thousands or even millions of flamingos due to the abundance of algae, although in the 1990s, the lake’s water levels decreased, causing flamingos to migrate to Lake Bogoria. However, since 2013, flamingos have returned as the lake’s conditions improved.

The surface of Lake Nakuru is often unrecognizable due to the shifting mass of pink flamingos. The park is an excellent option for visitors with limited time, as it is close to the city and can be toured in a day or visited en route to Masai Mara National Park.

Lake Nakuru National Park hosts around 56 mammal species, 400 bird species, and 550 plant species. The scenery is stunning, with the Rift Valley escarpment, euphorbia trees, yellow fever trees, and morning mist blanketing the beautiful lake.

Entry Fee

Kenyan Citizens: 860 shillings for adults and 215 shillings for children

Foreign Residents: 1,030 shillings for adults and 515 shillings for children

Foreign Non-Residents: USD 60 for adults and USD 35 for children

Please note that entry fees and fees for other activities may change over time, so it’s best to confirm them before traveling to the park.

History

Lake Nakuru National Park was initially used as a sport shooting area and bird-watching site for migratory birds in the 1950s. It was declared a conservation area in 1957. In 1961, two-thirds of the southern sector was designated as a bird sanctuary, which was later extended in 1964 to cover the entire lake and a strip of land around it.

The park was later expanded to 188 square kilometers to create a buffer zone and protect the lake from encroachment. In 1983, the park was declared a rhino sanctuary, and today it hosts about 38 white rhinos, 45 black rhinos, and Rothschild’s giraffes introduced in the 1980s. Temperatures at the park peak at around 28 degrees Celsius early in the year, but the park’s elevation helps keep it cool.

Lake Nakuru has faced pollution from agricultural, industrial, and human activities over the years. The lake dried up between 1951 and 1953, leading to efforts in 1953 to control soda ash. Research shows that flamingos in Lake Nakuru consume up to 250,000 kilograms of algae per hectare of surface area per year.

Although Lake Nakuru is highly alkaline, it supports diverse aquatic flora and fauna. Flamingos feed on algae, which forms from their droppings, plankton, and the warm, alkaline water.

Location

The park is located 186 kilometers northwest of Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya, in the central Rift conservation area of the southern Rift Valley. The main gate is located 4 kilometers from Nakuru town. The park is accessible by road or by air via the Naishi airstrip.

Best Time to Visit

Lake Nakuru National Park is open year-round, but the best time to visit is during the dry season from June to February when animals are more visible. During the wet season from March to April, wildlife can be harder to spot.

Accommodation

There are various accommodation options in and around Lake Nakuru National Park, from luxury hotels to mid-range and budget lodges, depending on the tourist’s budget. Nearby accommodations include Lakira Camp, Sarova Lion Hill Lodge, Naishi Guest House, Mbweha Safari Camp, JBB Hotel, Sajim Hotel, Osun Capital Hotel, Allan Q Guest House, Lake Nakuru Lodge, and Eagle View, among others.

Animals

Lake Nakuru National Park hosts 56 mammal species and other wildlife, including warthogs, black and white rhinos, Rothschild’s giraffes, waterbucks, hippos, pythons, leopards, and lions, though they are not frequently seen. Other animals include zebras, wildebeests, hyenas, wild dogs, and cheetahs. Primates like olive baboons, black and white colobus monkeys, and vervet monkeys can also be spotted.

The best time for wildlife viewing is early in the morning or late in the afternoon when animals are active. Bird watchers should visit from November to April when migratory birds from North Africa and Europe are present.

Lake Nakuru National Park is also home to 400 bird species, including ducks, pelicans, white-winged black terns, Verreaux’s eagle, pied kingfisher, goliath heron, African fish eagle, long-tailed widowbird, long-crested eagle, hottentot teal, greater blue-eared starling, lesser kestrel, black-tailed godwit, brown-backed scrub robin, grey-crowned crane, maccoa duck, montane white-eye, Ruppell’s vulture, shining sunbird, arrow-marked warbler, grey-headed woodpecker, crab plover, white-headed vulture, lappet-faced vulture, and pallid harrier.

A highlight of the park is Baboon Cliff, the best vantage point for viewing the entire lake and national park.
