Tsavo East National Park is an educational site for people who want to expand their knowledge. However much they know, they still want to learn because traveling is all about seeing new things. The tourism attractions at the park include:
Munda Rock: This rock is a water catchment spot that supplies water to natural dams and water areas from which animals drink. Munda Rock is an elevated area, allowing many tourists to stand on its tips to view animals like buffaloes, rhinos, giraffes, elephants, and antelopes as they move from one place to another.
Lugard Falls: Named after a British explorer and colonial administrator, Frederick Lugard, who arrived in Mombasa in 1888. These spectacular cascades are formed through erosion, which involves the wearing of the earth, leaving a rocky steep slope on which water flows, forming a plunge pool. There are also water rapids formed when water flows over hard rocks that resist erosion. These features attract tourists from around the world.
Yatta Plateau: Yatta Plateau is the world’s longest lava flow, spanning 290 kilometers. It formed as a result of an eruption, giving rise to features like Oldoinyo Sabuk Mountain. The plateau extends from the border of Tsavo National Park to Athi River, piquing the interest of tourists who want to catch a glimpse of this flat, elevated area.
Kanderi Swamp: The swamp lies along Voi River, attracting various animals to the flowing water source with cool air and drinking water. Lions often rest near these cool places, spending some of their free time at the river’s shores. Tourists on game drives get an opportunity to see them drinking water in large groups.
Galana and Tsavo River: These two rivers feed the park and its ecosystem. Tsavo River runs through Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks before joining Athi River to form River Galana. Rivers go through three stages: youthful stage (water flows very fast), mature stage (low levels of erosion), and old stage (deposition occurs). In general terms, a river is formed as water moves from higher elevation to lower elevation under the influence of gravity. River Galana flows into the Indian Ocean and is home to crocodiles that many tourists enjoy viewing.
Aruba Dam: This water reservoir was built in 1952. Tsavo National Park is blessed with many water sources, providing ample spots for animals during times of water scarcity.
Wildlife: Tsavo East, with its abundant water sources, hosts a wide variety of animals, making it one of Kenya’s premier wildlife destinations. The park is home to birds such as the Gray Crowned Crane, Saddle-billed Stork, Martial Eagle, Yellow-necked Spurfowl, and mammals like elephants, African hunting dogs, African wildcats, warthogs, zebras, civets, striped and spotted hyenas, bat-eared foxes, African hares, and primates such as monkeys and yellow baboons.
The entry fees for the park are as follows: Kenyan citizens pay 515 Kshs for adults and 215 Kshs for children. Kenyan residents also pay the same fee. Non-residents pay 52 US$ for adults and 35 US$ for children. Before entering, a tour guide or experienced officer reads the instructions that tourists must follow while inside the National Park. The following activities are available in this National Park for tourists to have a delightful stay:
Birdwatching: The park is home to many bird species, and their twittering voices welcome you at the park’s entrance. You’ll be inclined to stand at a certain spot and observe them. The park also receives migratory birds that visit during specific times of the year, coming from different parts of the world. Their stay is not long, typically spanning two to three months before they return to their home countries. The best time to view birds is during rainy seasons when they breed. Some bird species include Papyrus Gonelek, River Warble, Ostrich, Martial Eagle, Casmerodius albus, and African finfoot, to name a few.
Cultural Tours: Most of the National parks are located near the Maasai people, and tourists often explore their interesting lifestyle.
Game Drives: These are conducted in open-roof safari vans, offered in three shifts: morning (considered the best time when everyone is fresh and active), evening drives lasting 2-4 hours to spot shy animals that are less detectable during the day, and full-day drives where tourists don’t return to the lodge for lunch. Instead, they have packed lunches and stop at certain points to eat while observing the park’s diverse wildlife.
