A border is the boundary that separates two countries, and in this case, the Isebania border separates Kenya and Tanzania.
It is typically used by tourists who enjoy witnessing the great wildebeest migration that takes place in the two national parks, Serengeti and Masai Mara National Parks.
A six-hour drive is sufficient to reach this crossing point, which is located to the west of Masai Mara National Reserve and has inhabitants from various ethnic groups, such as Kuria, Luo, Luhya, Kisii, Somali, Kikuyu, Tanzanians, to name a few.
It is advisable to have a valid visa, a yellow fever vaccination card, and other required documents to avoid any issues at the crossing point.
Tourists who cross over can enjoy various activities, such as:
● Mingling with the local people You can’t pass through the Isebania border and not be intrigued by the local language, dress code, and meals (where some tourists even participate in food preparation, such as Chipsi Mayai, which includes fries and eggs, Mshikaki, containing skewered meat, Nyama Choma, grilled meat, fish, rice, pilau, maize, Ugali, a common food served in different restaurants, and more). You can also experience different dance styles, among other cultural experiences.
This allows travelers to make stopovers in various local communities.
● Nature walk Some prefer face-to-face interaction with the community, so they walk around the area, interviewing locals about topics of interest and often capturing photographs of their homes and surroundings.
● Wide view of different species This can be done at either Masai Mara or Serengeti National Park, where a variety of animals can be observed, especially during the dry season when they are in search of food and water.
The means of transport used when crossing from Kenya to Tanzania via the Isebania border is road transport. Many travelers use private cars or safari vehicles, while others opt for public buses, often referred to as modern coaches, that take you from Nairobi to Mwanza for a fee of Kshs 2,000. There are also matatus, public taxis that can be boarded from Kisumu to Mwanza, and then to Migori at a fee of Ksh 600. Stopovers are made along the way for those in need of food and restroom facilities. The final destination is Isebania border, where shared taxis are commonly used.
Many tourists may prefer to stay in the area, and the available accommodations include Iliba Guest House, Basenta Guest House, Border Point Lodge, Tembo Lodge, The Palm Lodge, and more.
The only way to define your limits is by going beyond them, and legally crossing the Isebania border allows you to experience a piece of heaven.
