Awash National park is characterized by immense volcanic activity. There has been volcanic movements over 40 million which led to the formation of features like hot springs, gorges and craters. The park was gazzetted in the year 1966.
One of the notable mountains here is the Fantale Mountain which is a Strato Volcano. It has a very big crater on the top. The highest point of the mountain is about 2000 meters above sea level. The last time the mountain erupted was in the year 1820. The area is very fertile due to the lava and ash from the mountain. There is a variety of vegetation here from acacia, grasslands, riverine and palm forest.
There is a lake here called Awash where the National park derives its name. The Awash National park is located in the Afar and Oromia areas of the country. This is about 215 Kilometers from the Capital Addis Ababa. The months of March to May are probably the hottest months here and the animals will always be hiding in the shades during the day. The Awash National park is located about 230 Kilometers from the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa. You can hire an operator to drive you or you can rent a self drive car. You can also hire a car with a driver. There is public transportation from the Capital to the town of Awash is on the out skirts of the national park. From this township you can hire a special taxi to take you into the park or you can arrange with your lodge to pick you up from here. There is a possibility of flying from Adddis Ababa to Dire Dawa where you can now go by road to the park.
